I've been asked if I was totally shocked that we were having twins. I wasn't. I kind of suspected that this pregnancy was a twin one and have been trying to convince myself otherwise for about a month now. For one thing, I started showing at 2 months and while most women show earlier with their second pregnancy as their bodies know exactly what to do, I am considerably larger than what I thought other people I knew were on their second pregnancy. I was into maternity jeans in the middleish of December and when we got to tell people at 13 weeks I was so relieved that I didn't have to try to hide it anymore. Now that they know I am carrying twins, there have been a number of people who have said that they thought I was a little large for where I was at in the pregnancy. No kidding! :) My friend, A is three weeks ahead of me and MUCH smaller!
I also felt a lot of movement. Again people kept saying - DH, my parents, my Mom's group ladies - that you obviously know what it feels like the second time and therefore can feel more movement. But I was feeling movement (little ones) on both sides of my stomach at once. Not really a possibility for one little bitty baby.
I started to think that maybe I was off in my dates and was in fact a month farther along than I thought and had had a cycle for the first month, though I was in fact pregnant during it. Could explain the size and more movement than usual. So when she said that there was two babies in there, I was surprised, but not totally surprised. I kept telling DH in the ultrasound "I told you so." To which he would reply, "I thought you were joking!" Not so much.
I went for my 20 week appointment today - they had the results from the ultrasound and everything looks good with both babies - all said normal all the way down the list. There is one placenta, they are monochorionic (one outer sac) and diamnionic (two amniotic sacs) - therefore they are identical! Cool! No we don't know the sex of the babies - and don't ask when/if we do find out or try to guess because I hate lying to people and you will be forcing me to, 'kay? They also did all the measurements as usual - I have had a total weight gain of 6 lbs so far, which they said is normal. The fundal height is 25 cm, compared to my last appt at 16 weeks of 17 cms. I told you I was big! The rule of thumb is 1 cm per week of gestation so most ladies even though they might look bigger only have an average fundal height of 20 cm at this point. DH says we gotta start getting pictures because I am going to be as big as a house! If people comment though I just say that we are having twins and it is allowed. Oh, the babies heartrates were 154 and 145 beats, at the ultrasound they were 145 and 134, so they fluctuate all over the place - apparently normal as well.
When we get that picture taken I will put it on here and you can see for yourself!

I'm so glad they are both healthy! Identical twins too! That is really cool! Whew, and I thought life changed with one! Thinking of you and praying for you with everything you have to go through in the next few months!
It's so good that you had an idea already, I think that makes it a tiny bit easier to wrap your head around the reality of it all. IDENTICAL! That's so awesome! I'm going to put my vote in now...I say girls! Mostly because I really miss shopping in that section and now it gives me an excuse to browse until your due date! Waiting for that picture... ;o)
that's exciting that they are identical! Also I am happy to hear that both are healthy, and so are you! I'm excited because now i get to make 2 blankets for your little kiddies. Take care!
Heather - Yeah, we are going from 1 to 3 in one fell swoop. We can use all the prayers sent up for us!
Jobina - go ahead and browse for girls all you want - I would love girls, but if they are boys it'll be good too. Little girls' clothes are so adorable, though!
Vanessa - We LOVE Rhys' blanket - so happy that the twins will each get one of their own too! :)
