Whazzup wid dat?

Lately I cannot go to the bathroom without R deciding he needs to follow me in. In our downstairs bathroom, we have a sliding door and he has figured out how to get his little fingers in the small crack between the door and the frame and open it. Then he stands there and grins at me and tries to grab the toilet paper and at times even wants to get on my lap.
The thing that frustrates me is that this afternoon when we were out and I needed to use a public washroom and wanted him in the stall with me, he tried to escape under the door and I had to grab the back of him and haul him back into the stall.
Why does he want in when I don't want him and out when I want him to stay, that's what I want to know?
DH couldn't believe I would write a post about this, but hey, this must've happened to other people and you can relate. His solution, "Why don't you just lock the door?" This doesn't work for everything though and our downstairs door has a quirk that every once and awhile it will stick and not be able to open immediately and I would hate that to happen sometime when R needed me.
Yet another one of life's quirky things to figure out...
