We got home and called a co-worker/friend of M's who is a photographer to ask his opinion about the Nikon D5000 vs the Canon EOS Rebel XSi and he had already looked up several articles and comparisons about them (M had called him while we were at the camera store) and walked M through them.) Bottom line - if we were looking for a "right now" camera, the D5000 was a good choice, as was the XSi - there was a third option that would be great for a "permanent" camera - one we would not feel the need to upgrade, that was even better and Black's had it on sale for $150 off (the XSi was only $50 off) and it was the T1i.

I am also taking a course on Adobe Photoshop CS3 and 4, so the pics (that I have time to edit! :) will be much better from now on! M and I have been looking for a hobby to do together and we have been wanting to get going with photography as it interests us both, so our new camera makes it even more exciting.
As for your looking for a new camera, Jobina... are you looking for a DSLR or a point-and-shoot? We have had our Canon PowerShot SD500 for 4.5 years and it has done really well for us. They now have all the way to the SD1200 and at a really good price. If you are looking for a DSLR and depending on what you want to do with it, the XSi was my camera of choice for over a year. What finally sold me on the T1i was that it was just so clear and the photos were amazing. Here are the reviews on them that we looked at (as well as others) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS500D/ (the T1i is called the 500D in Europe) and http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond5000/page22.asp. It's a great site that you can search for all sorts of cameras and find out what would work best for your family. Also, go to photography stores and talk to them, find out pros and cons, just DO NOT take something on a whim because you are tired of looking. You may end up having to take it back and get something else. :)
