I went for yet another ultrasound on Monday and an appointment on Tuesday with the doctor. Both went well - the babies did everything that they were supposed to in the ultrasound. We had been praying that they would both show signs of breathing, which apparently they need to know at this point and they did. I also got an ultrasound on my leg as I had a knot there by some varicose veins that I have developed during pregnancy. Apparently I have developed a small superficial blood clot in behind my knee on the right leg. The doctor isn't concerned, though I am going for another ultrasound on it next week to make sure it hasn't gotten any bigger. The babies were 3 lb 10 oz and 4 lbs 5 oz with heart rates of 142 and 131 at the ultrasound. At my OB appointment they had heart rates of 160 and 150. I have given up asking for the fundal height as the babies have begun to spread sideways so the measurement is off anyway. I keep meaning to get a measuring tape and measure around my belly as it is getting bigger and bigger. I have begun to rival a bus in size now, though am only 167 lbs. :) I did get some new clothes a couple of weeks ago that I feel good in, so don't feel quite so badly for outgrowing most of my maternity clothes. I have a pair of XL pants now and mostly LG tops. It still shocks me a bit after my maternity clothes with R were SM pants and XS shirts. Oh, the difference with multiples.
Last night we went to our first coffee party with the Twins, Triplets and More Assoc. They have coffee get togethers for the different zones once a month. It was nice to talk to some people who have been there and lived to talk about it. Poor DH was the only man there. Apparently the hubby comes when the wife is pregnant and when the babes are newborn, but after that they are usually the ones to stay home with the kids while it is a night out for the mommy. He got to talk to some ladies though and held a 5 week old twin. She and her sister were born at 35 weeks, only spent a day in the NICU and then went home. They are the second set of twins for their parents. Most people there had fraternal twins, though one lady had identical twin girls who were 10 months old. I did get asked how we knew that they were identical, which surprised me a little. I then explained about the one placenta and chorion and that they both had their own amnion sacs. The other mom with identicals said her girls were the same way. DH told me later that see, not even parents of twins know these things, because I tend to get frustrated with people not really understanding even after I explain things to them. Genetics was really the only unit that I liked in Biology, so all this stuff makes total sense to me and I soak it all in. I have to remember that not all people are that way. It does still make me wonder about people who say that we could have a boy and a girl after we tell them that they are identical. In my mind it is common knowledge that God made boys and girls different, and that is how we even have babies. :) I think people just don't think or know necessarily about the fact that identical doesn't just mean that they look similar, it means that other than their fingerprints, everything about them is the genetically same (according to my research only the fingerprints are not the same. I might have to rescind this someday, but that's what I am going with at this point.) They do not have to be the same weight of course. Our babies are presently 11 ounces apart and have been growing at the same consistent rate since March. The doctor is extremely happy about their progress and growth, which makes me happy.
The babies heart rates are still consistently 10-20 beats apart. They are so funny that way. I wonder if it is because Baby B is basically sitting on Baby A, therefore the heart rate is higher. Who knows.
I will update this post with bump pictures later - they are on the other computer, so I do not have access at this time. Check back again!
