On Wednesday we went for our first ultrasound. A bit later than most people's which are at 18 weeks - ours was at 19 weeks - and many people are having an 11 week ultrasound these days, though they are done along with blood tests to check for markers for Down's Syndrome. We decided that we didn't want this early ultrasound as if there was anything wrong we wouldn't do anything with the baby anyway and the chances of a false positive are high and who needs unneccessary worry for the remaining 6 months or more of your pregnancy. All this to say that we had not yet had an ultrasound.
So I went in for the u/s and the technician asked if it was my first one with this pregnancy and I said yes. We got all ready and she put the wand on my tummy and within the first 30 seconds said "You really should have had an early ultrasound."
"Why?"
"Because there are two in there."
"WHAT!?!?!"
And she proceeded to turn the screen towards me and show me that, yes, there were two little heads and bodies there!
WE'RE HAVING TWINS, PEOPLES!
Two babies, dos bebes, deux bebes... it's exhilarating and scary any way you say it. We are feeling so blessed by this, yet all the things that you have to think about with one - the swing, the car seat, a stroller, etc. - are doubled when you are having two. As well as the fact that my new-to-me Subaru (which I love, have I said that lately? :) will have to be sold to get a minivan as there is no conceivable way that three carseats will fit across in the Outback. That is a must before the beginning of June. We also have to think about how long our house will work for us - we only have two bedrooms - R's and ours - which will work for the first while, but not in the long run.
On the other hand, we are pumped. I will be getting my three kids, which I always wanted. DH has always said we will take them one at a time, but boy, God had other plans! :) So I am back on track with my goals. (Ha, ha!) The great thing will be that we will have no middle child, really. It will be R and the twins. We do not know what they are, so don't ask, and if we do ever find out I will not be telling before they are born anyway. We are so excited about the joy that they are going to bring to us, tripling the love, laughter and love that we already have in our home and our family.
I will be moved from the Low Risk Maternity Care office that I have been going to, to an obstetrician who specializes in twins most likely. I am excited about this as well, as I will have all my care from one practitioner and he will deliver my babies as well. More personal - yeah for me! - I have been a little envious of the care that my friend has been getting with her midwife and now God has taken care of that as well. We would have gone with a midwife if we could have afforded it. And I couldn't go with a midwife now with a high risk pregnancy, so God took care of that too. He is good and there are so many things to be thankful for. Oh, and according to the doctor at LRM that I talked to the OB that they are referring me to (which I don't know if he will take me on yet, so please pray about that for me!) is Dr. Stephen Wood and two of my friends, one who was a delivery nurse in L & D with him and the other who worked in records at the hospital said he is so nice. In fact, C said that he is the nicest OB she knew from there. Another blessing. God is good, that's all I have to say!
To finish off, I will leave you with some pictures of our little people. The radiology office that we were at has 4D and you can get video, so we did. We won't with all our ultrasounds - apparently they do one a month with twins - but we did with this one. I guess we will be finding out all about twins over the next years...

How wonderful and exciting for all of you! We were just thinking of getting rid of our baby swing and car seat etc. and I just felt it was too soon yet becasue there will be someone I know who could use them. And lo and behold you are having twins! They are yours if you need them.

That is so awesome Rayna. I think twins are the best. It's so efficient! Double the fun. Congrats!
I was so sure Mark was lying until I realized that he'd been smiling the whole time he told me, he never does that! It's so mind boggling and exciting all at the same time! I can't wait to see how big you'll get, you'll be so cute!
It's funny Jobina - I was going to ask Michael to let me tell you as I thought that you might not believe Mark! He was off the phone by the time I was finished putting Rhys down though, so I couldn't.

Congrats Rayna! WOWEE! You will have as many kids as we will. We will have to compare notes. God is good! I will pray for you and Mike! Is there any other twins in your family at all?
Carolyn
See we both waited 8 years, and will now both have 3 under 3...we all know what we're doing!?!
Yeah Karle - I found it interesting after my comment on your blog about not having 2 in diapers that I am now going to, for a lot longer than you too! :)
Wow! That's pretty crazy, exciting, scary and just WOW! Congrats. I don't think I've ever been to your blog before, but I'm also a friend of Jobina's from Manitoba, so I figured I would check out your blog.
There is a carseat called the Sunshine Kids Radian 65 that should fit three accross the back seat. They are a bit pricier, and then you would have to probably get all three the same, so you couldn't use the one you probably already have. Also, they are not the bucket/carrying baby seats. They are a convertible seat from 5 to 65 pounds. You can use the 5 point harness the whole time too, not just til the usual 40 pounds.
Thanks for the tip Stacey - I went and took a look at those carseats and while they are much narrower - it still doesn't look like they would fit three across in our Subaru. And rear-facing I believe Michael and I would be eating the dashboard, our seats would have to be so far forward! :) (It would be that way with any of those seats.) OK if it is only the passengers' side, but when you are driving it is extremely uncomfortable.
Just have to resign myself to a van... though I am starting to get a little bit excited about it. Just wish I could keep my Subaru too!
Hey Rayna, we're fitting 3 in our Honda CRV! Tight but they fit.
Wow, wow, wow! That is just totally crazy and exciting all at the same time! We are thrilled for you guys and will definitely be praying for you!
Hey Rayna,
A gal at my work, her friend has triplets.. and they got rear facing car seats that were convertable(newborn to toddler), she had to special order them.. perhaps they are the same ones mentioned previously in another post?.. and guess what. .they have a Subaru.. and she gets all 3 in the back.. and her husband is 6 foot 5, and he is ok to drive... She said they were expensive, but cheaper than having to get a new car!! just thought I would let you know.. My Friend is going to get the exact name of them this weekend..
Cass
hey Rayna,
I'm the daddy!
