The Big Cook

So I used to do"Once a Month Cooking" when we lived in Brandon and once we moved here to Calgary I got involved in a group of ladies who did cooking every 6 weeks or so with a company here that I don't remember the name of. (Oops.)
It's been awhile since I did this stuff though. And I am beginning to think that I need to do something like it again. Jobina is inspiring with her cooking ahead and Angela had written about it about a month ago, I need to get back into this, especially with my Tupperware making me more busy and life getting a little more hectic. I am trying to be more organised, because after ten years my disorganisation is driving my husband nuts and with a kid it is no longer OK to "fly by the seat of one's pants."
So, the other day I had HelpTV on for some reason - I don't know why - and they were doing a show on Organization (it was December 4th). The thing that caught my eye is that they were featuring three ladies from Medicine Hat who wrote a book called "The Big Cook". These ladies have 11 children altogether and are busy moms. They have tested these recipes over the years and refined the process and now have put it together in a book, with each recipe having columns for different amounts of meals and shopping lists etc. They are recipes that you can make in one day with your friends. Check out their website here. Apparently they are for sale at Costco, so the next time I am there I am going to look for one.
Now I just have to find some people who want to do this with me because it is so much easier to do and stick to when you have some friends and accountability.

I have that book! My Mom got it for me when it first came out and I've used it a tonne! They make a lot of recipes for 6 people and since my kids don't eat all that much I halved the recipes and make 2 months worth at a time! It saves a heap load of time and then I ALWAYS have SOMETHING in the freezer! It's a good book I find especially for winter when you want warm food most days.

Wow, that book sounds really cool. I'm going to have to check it out too! I LOVE Costco and I need to make a stop there next week.

ps - I'm honored that Jayda is one of Rhys' favorite blogger babies ;)

I am looking forward to getting it and convincing some people that they want to do it with me. Should make life easier!

Hey, I have a friend (Teresa Taylor) who wants to do this in the new year. You could totally do it with us. That would be fun!

I would love to! When were you thinking of doing it?

It's funny Heather, I was just on your blog a couple of minutes ago. :)

What an awesome idea! I'm going to look for that book...it'll definitely help me with my meal planning. I have found the more organized I am, the more fun I have. I took a look at their sample recipe and plan to try it! Keep us posted if you do go ahead and make a bunch of the meals! I'd love to know your favorites.

Hi Rayna -- yes, The Big Cook is awesome! I'm a little biased of course -- I'm one of the authors! We happened across your great comments on your blog today. We get together 3 - 4 times a year and prepare over 200 meals in 1 day! Totally frees up that supper hour on a daily basis -- there are so many other more interesting things to do than stand in front of a stove every day! We actually are coming to Calgary on Jan 14 to the First Alliance Church to do a presentation. We're going to do a demo where a volunteer will make 8 meals in 8 minutes and people can sample one of our top recipes "Mighty Meatballs". Make sure to try the BBQ Beef, Thai Chicken and Amazing Chicken and.... we have a list of our top faves on our forum too. Anyways, just thought I'd drop a note -- if you have any questions at all, just send them my way through the website and we'd love to answer them! This is one thing that can really change your life. Think Big!
